Mark Twains The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn â⬠Controversial :: Adventures Huckleberry Huck Finn Essays
Huckleberry Finn â⬠Controversial It appears as though a ceaseless inquiry. We rarely let it rest. You realize the inquiry I'm discussing; should the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn be prohibited from American Literature courses? It's been contended from such a large number of various stances, yet it has never been settled. Is Huckleberry Finn actually a disputable book? No, I don't concur with the forbidding of Huckleberry Finn. This book is viewed as a work of art. It investigates the profundities of our past from multiple points of view. The individuals who believe the book to be dubious most likely have never ever understood it. Probably, they're putting together their decisions with respect to the unnecessarily utilized word, nigger. For the individuals who have perused the book and still feel important to boycott it are clearly missing the key purposes of this American great. On the off chance that you comprehend Huckleberry Finn, at that point you'll understand it's not about bondage or prejudice. It's tied in with being fair. In the book, Huck concedes that Jim had an unprecedented level head for a nigger. If you were to take out the highly contrasting situation, you would see that this statement is obviously only acknowledgment. Huck is tolerating Jim, paying little mind to his ethnic foundation. In the event that you looked further, you wou ld likewise observe, the book is tied in with nothing not as much as opportunity and the journey for opportunity. It's about a slave who violates the law and dangers his life to win his opportunity and be brought together with his family. He was fortunate enough to have a companion who made him his closest companion and helped him to get away. Genuinely this isn't dubious; it's reality. Another questionable part of the book would be the utilization of nigger and its being in the book more than multiple times makes consistent examination. I feel the word was not used to be bigot and its use in the book gives extraordinary portrayal of the manner in which life was during the pre-common war time. Individuals need to get a handle on the idea that that is the means by which dark were dealt with at that point. In the present society, we would discover statements, for example, Great generous! Was anyone harmed? No'm. Only a nigger, APPALING! In any case, indeed, it was written in a previous time setting when statements like that were alright to state.

John Locke Provisos Essay Free Essays
John Locke was an English rationalist who had the idea that all individuals have characteristic rights. Their regular rights incorporated that of life. self-governance and things and the idea of these rights being held by every individual is habitually supposed to be the essential impact of the American Declaration of Independence. We will compose a custom paper test on John Locke Provisos Essay or on the other hand any comparative subject just for you Request Now Locke more distant clarifies his guideline behind characteristic rights in Two Treatises of Government and particularly assets directly in his ââ¬Å"Provisos. â⬠saying the conditions the brand assets people or private. Lockeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Provisosâ⬠talks about the idea that effects becomes private when an individual works upon the assets. His intelligent reasoning that the land turns into the personââ¬â¢s private possessions is that an individual has the privilege to the his rewards for so much hard work. furthermore, he other than has the option to the asset that drag his organic products. in this occasion the effects. As Locke says. ââ¬Å"He by his work does. so to speak. encompass it from the commonâ⬠( page 437 ) . By this he implies that by tuging over the land. the land is taken off from the rest of society. the normal. what's more, turns into the private assets of the individual. Locke other than accepts that ââ¬Å"as much as a grown-up male tills. workss. improves. develops. furthermore, can use the product of. so much is his propertyâ⬠( page 437 ) . In this. he is stating that a grown-up male can have each piece much as can be utile to him ; asserting effects in overflow and non having the option to do it gainful is inaccurate on the grounds that the assets will so make a trip to blow on the other hand of proving to be fruitful. This is mistaken in light of the fact that ââ¬Å"nothing was made by God for grown-up male to bungle or destroyâ⬠( page 436 ) and holding land deceiving waste is similarly as annihilating the land. This idea from Lockeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Provisosâ⬠follows from his idea of general effects rights. He accepts that land that has non been impacted by an individualââ¬â¢s work is land accessible for the entirety of society. Man should at present regard the land and non work it. yet, ââ¬Å"were it non for the corruptness and fierceness of sick person grown-up male. there would be no interest of some other. no need that work powers should separate from this incredible and characteristic communityâ⬠( page 441 ) . Anyway in light of the fact that world can non be trusted. Locke accepts that one time a grown-up male improves a bit of possessions. that land and its stocks have a place with him. Despite the fact that that land may have a place with one grown-up male. it is as yet benefitting the rest of society on the grounds that ââ¬Å"the commissariats working to the help of human life created by one section of land of encased and developed land are multiple times more than those which are yielded by a section of land of place where there is an equivalent abundance lying waste in commonâ⬠( page 437 ) . This is like the way wherein both a farmer and society profits by his yield. The planter and society both can have nutriment from his yield and what harvest goes to the rest of society. he is compensated for. which permits him to continue seeding seeds that will proceed to cultivate the normal. A situation of private things that would strife with one of the Lockean arrangement is possessions that is acclaimed through pressuring Native Americans to hold with the American imposts that were being forced and the American guideline. or on the other hand to go forward. for example, with the Indian Removal Act that was marked into law in 1830. The Native Americans had worked the land and made it fit to back up their way of life and in the journey to achieve Manifest Destiny. nil would hinder the decided leaders of the Americans. Blending to Locke. the land genuinely had a place with the Native Americans since they had worked on the land to do it agreeable. They accomplished non work it ; they utilized the assets wisely and nil went to blow with their moderate way of life. With the Indian Removal Act that President Andrew Jackson marked into result. every single Native American must be migrated to nations west of the Mississippi River. The Native Americans were expelled on the balance that American colonizers required the land and needed to achieve Manifest Destiny. Another situation influencing private assets that would conflict with one of the Lockean arrangement would be that of the specialists prehending land because of unpaid income improvements. In this situation. a planter could hold yielded a major harvest. however, the interest for his collect declined enormously to the point that he can't do a major satisfactory net gain to pay his income upgrades. This could fall into a structure for some mature ages to come. at last creation the point that the specialists can no longer only keep up seting the planter into more obligation. The cultivator would hold to guarantee insolvency and the specialists would prehend his territory. This would conflict with Lockeââ¬â¢s felt that the land a grown-up male plant. is his. The cultivator was making as well as could be expected. was benefitting society. what's more, neââ¬â¢er assented to losing his entitlement to his territory. be that as it may, the specialists removed it at any rate. I accept that Locke right adheres to a meaningful boundary on private effects since we have the directly over our ain natural structures. also, if crafted by those natural structures can join with assets to make something. so we reserve the privilege to guarantee that stock and the assets we used to do it. No 1 else set forth the endeavor and consequently the product of our endeavors are our own. I accept that troublesome work merits reward and that wages is the privilege to the product. As Locke says. ââ¬Å"The work of his natural structure and crafted by his guardianships. we may state. are appropriately hisâ⬠( page 436 ) . Effects of Tattoos on Society Having a moral acceptance toward others is an important aspect in sustaining a happy and fulfilled life, but maybe some things that are quite visible can be hard to look past. Tattoos are one of the most controversial topics when it comes to professionalism mixing with open mindedness. People all across the world have tattoos and are now seen in everyday society. Tattoos have also gone back thousands of years and in some cultures were celebrated, or shown for cultural reasons. Furthermore, the U.S. military is now integrating new policies on tattoos, ensuring the domestication, and acceptance of tattoos. Effects of tattoos on modern day society have had a definite impact. Tattoos wonââ¬â¢t be fully accepted by everyone in society, but with increasing popularity, society is getting more used to seeing them as another form of art and self-expression. Jamaican Sugar Plantations Essay - 1417 Words
Jamaican Sugar Plantations When beginning to discuss sugar plantations in Jamaica, the word slavery comes to mind. This thought occurs because of the crucial role that the slaves played in attempting to make these plantations successful. During the 18th century, the so-called sugar colonies were the most valuable possessions of overseas empires (Floyd, 38). Sugar plantations produced money for not only the economy of Jamaica, but for their motherland England as well. Essentially these plantations were created because the aristocrats in Europe needed something to sweeten all of their drinks. However, with lack of space in Europe, the wealthy decided that plantations would flourish in Jamaica. Despite the success of theseâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In 1673, there were roughly 9,500 slaves in Jamaica. However, by 1754, over nine time as many slaves resided in the same region. To further explain the exploitation of slavery, one can see over 200,000 slaves in Jamaica by the end of 1775. While these numbers expla in the prominence of sugar in Jamaica, one must wonder why so many slaves were needed to produce sugar. The production of sugar was not a simple one and consequently required the work of many slaves. A Jamaican sugar estate of 500-1000 acres might require around 250 hands in field and factory (Floyd, 38). Because plantations relied on so many different slaves, the treatment they received was quite horrendous. The whole system became quite degrading as slaves were often sold off as cattle and the strongest slave would often cost the most money. At the market, the physical qualities of both male and female slaves were critically appraised, as in a modern livestock market (Floyd, 39). Once assigned to a specific plantation, strength, size, age, and sex grouped slaves. Because of the many different jobs that are needed in the production of sugar cane, all slaves were of the utmost importance. The heaviest and strongest men and women were designated to clear the land and then plant the sugar cane. The next group of people according to the slave societies hierarchical guide is the teenagers who were given less burdensome tasks such as de-weeding the fields. The application has a sensor which is attached to the phone of the customer and will provide a warning to the customers regarding the application of the Mask. Opportunities: It has been seen that the women of the society are too much conscious about their skin, as a result, they look for 360 face treatment. The newly launched product can survive in the market for long-term because it provides an overall treatment of the skin (Okello, et al., 2014). On the other hand, it can be said that now the women of the society can get a flawless skin by sitting at their home. The newly launched mask provides skin treatment within 90 seconds. Thus, it can be said that Foreo UFO Mask can survive in the market for a long time. Opportunities are huge for the product, if it modifies its features and excludes the part of LED lights from it as the growing awareness of the skin decease may cause disruption of the sale of the product any time. Threats: The major threat to the product is its usage of LED lights. As per the growing rate of skin cancer, most of the women as well men have started avoiding electronic skin care devices that can cause skin cancer. Among the other threats, the price of the product deserves mention. As compared to similar products that exist in the market, the price of the product is high. Therefore, the device is not affordable for people of all economic strata. The affluent people can only afford to buy it. Apart from similar devices, fairness creams are also available in the market. These fairness creams are less in price than the electronic device (Ayub et al., 2013). References Abdi, A., Ashouri, M., Jamalpour, G., Sandoosi, S. M. (2013). The Media and Children under the age of 13
Table of Contents Background A Worrying Trend Violent Media Causes Aggression among Children Psychological Influences Positive Media Influence Works Cited Background It is undeniable that the media affects our lives from the moment we develop our senses and continue to do so for the rest of our lives (Ramage et al, 462). The debate that continues to rage on is the degree to which media affects our actions, thoughts, and the decisions we make. Today, we are living in a society that extols independence and liberty, and therefore to most individuals, it is quite scary that an external source, such as the media, influences our lives to such a high extent.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Media and Children under the age of 13 specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Therefore, it is not surprising that a number of people do not believe that the media has a strong influence on their life. However, when we are referring to children, the debate becomes personalized. Due to their age, children are very vulnerable and any form of media that they come across can have a strong influence on their life presently and in the future (Coca, para. 2). Today, due to the economic pressures, many parents spend only a few hours with their children as they work long hours, this leaves the media as the only form of interaction that children can access, especially the television. This is worsened by the increase in the amount of violence and sex on television. Does the violent and sexual content displayed on television influence our children? Sadly, the answer to this question is yes. Violence and sex in the media heavily affects a childââ¬â¢s development, hardly a day passes without a mention of violence among children, or a girl aged 15 or 16 becoming pregnant. These actions arise from the childââ¬â¢s interaction with media at a young age. A Worrying Trend A visit at an elementary or middle school exposes th e degree to which media affects the way our children dress, who they interact and talk to, and their behavior. Kindergarten teachers no longer deal with inquisitive six year old children, or curious ten year olds in the middle schools, but have to separate two warring children now and again. These children see violence and intimidation as the only way through which they can assert their authority and solve their problems. Parents and teachers cannot match the media in influencing children. A research carried out by Mediascope Institute revealed that at the age of six, a child has spent more time watching television than time spent with their parents in their entire life. This revelation paints a grim truth about our childrenââ¬â¢s interaction with the media. Media does not affect children evenly, for example, the aggression levels among children after being exposed to violent material on the media varies fro child to child, but the effect is still noteworthy. The influence has be en found to be stronger on younger children (8-12 years old).Advertising Looking for essay on communications media? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Age and sex plays a significant role in influencing childrenââ¬â¢s response to violent media. Boys are known to be more responsive that girls. Other factors such as family background also come into play, for example, when a child is brought up in a violent family, the likelihood of being influenced by violent media is higher than those who were never exposed to violence. Many children believe that the effect of media on their lives is quite insignificant, a school of thought that makes it difficult to tackle the problem. Violent Media Causes Aggression among Children Behavioralresearch among children has shown that a relationship exists between child aggression and watching violent media. These studies prove that ââ¬Å"violent imagery in television, film and video, and compute r games has substantial short-term effects on arousal, thoughts, and emotionsâ⬠(Hitti, para. 2). These forms of media include violent video games, television shows, and videos. This is compounded by the fact that more than half of all television shows contain violent scenes (Tompkins, para. 1). There are two conflicting sides to this subject. The media who promote the violent shows, video games and other forms of entertainment insist that this is safe and the others maintain that such material promotes violence. Research shows that children who have access to violent media are more likely to have feelings of resentment and decreased emotional reactions towards others. While most grown-ups can recognize that media violence is untrue and that the actors only play according to the script, children are more susceptible. Children under the age of 13 cannot discern between reality and fantasy. At this age, the take whatever they see on television as the absolute truth. In fact, chil dren are known to harm themselves while trying to copy the moves or stunts that they see in television shows. The influence of violent media on childrenââ¬â¢s lives is summarized by the Academy of Pediatrics that state that ââ¬Å"scientific studies and reviews conclude that significant exposure to media violence increases the risk of aggressive behavior in certain children, desensitizes them to violence and makes them believe that the world is a ââ¬Ëmeaner and scarierââ¬â¢ placeâ⬠(Academy of Pediatrics). Companies that make various forms of violent media argue that violent children prefer to play violent video games. Research suggests otherwise, therefore we can conclude that while violent games are played by violent children, the aggression levels increase due to the exposure.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on The Media and Children under the age of 13 specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Psychologica l Influences The debate on whether various forms of media such as video games benefit the children that play them is wide open. Critics of video games maintain that these forms of media heavily influence children as they actually participate physically while playing such games. It has also been shown that children who spend more than four hours watching television do not work hard in their academics, have poorly developed reading abilities, spend less time with their peers, have fewer leisure activities, and are more prone to be overweight. Positive Media Influence Not all forms of media affect children in a negative manner: content of the media is key to the influence. For example, educational television programs that communicate specific academic or social skills achieve much success in their objective. Besides, positive and educational programs can enhance altruism, cooperation, and even patience among children (Wilson 90). Besides, media has a positive influence on the developme nt of children: it helps them to widen their imagination and in developing their language. The media has become a part of our childrenââ¬â¢s lives, therefore, rather than preventing them from having access to media, parents can monitor the type of media that children take in. Besides, parents must strive to stay involved in their childrenââ¬â¢s lives and not just let them sit in front of the television set or playing video games. Parents must also pay attention to their childrenââ¬â¢s needs (Ramage et al, 450). Works Cited Academy of Pediatrics. Parenting. 2011. Web. Coca, Nithin. The Effects of Media on Children. Essay on First Experience with Writting
Essay on First Experience with Writting Essay on First Experience with Writting From what I can remember of my first writing experience; I was around eleven years old, and I would always carry this tiny green leather journal around. It never once left my sight; from being on my nightstand to going out of town. I would always carry that tiny leather journal. I have never been this out-spoken type of girl, I was always shy and so very quiet, so quiet that you would literally forgotten that I was there, but my god when I open that journal I would instantly start creating these short stories. Nothing made me happier then grabbing ahold of a pencil and letting my creativity flow through my head and write down the most absurd yet clever ideas that till today. I still get entertained from reading my past stories. I created a whole new life for me that was only living on paper, but I made it come to life in my mind of course. In the light of me being quiet and shy, through paper I had a loud mind. Youââ¬â¢ll be surprised of the many things your mind can create. Although besides my foolish creativities I ended being more of a socially awkward person, never felt comfortable in crowded places; such as the mall, movies even with family. Only times I ever talked loud and became very talkative was around my friends, but other than that being around strangers or having to do a presentation in front of the class has always been difficult for me. Not to mention the times I would carry that leather green journal around and immediately start to write on it in public. In school, with family, shopping with friends, even when I go out to eat I would end up taking that tiny book out and write down my thoughts or any crazy imagination that I would come up with. There were times when I took that book out and got in trouble with my teacher for not paying attention in class I would usually end up having my journal taken away and not receiving it till class was over. My parents were sometimes worried on how little I would talk and how much time I would spend on, well, writing on my journal. As a matter of fact, I created a

Capitalism
An essay defining the economic theory of capitalism. Capitalism is an economic system in which the private sector controls and regulates the economy. This paper defines capitalism and explores its origins in economist Adam Smiths Wealth of Nations back in 1776.It also discusses critics of the system, the most influential being Karl Marx whose Marxism theory claimed that economic crises and capitalism are linked. Under ideal conditions, the growth of capitalism spurs friendly competition for consumers, ensuring that private enterprises will provide the best goods or the best services at the most reasonable prices. The reality, however, is that bigger corporations tend to monopolize their markets through practices other than friendly competition.Rather than concentrating on product development, many big manufacturers rely on marketing practices such as glitzy ad campaigns and celebrity endorsers to hook consumers.Corollary to this, many smaller businesses that provide comparable or even better products are not able to compete. This limited arena of competition also gives rise to an underclass of workers, many located overseas.Conglomerates such as Nike take advantage of cheap labor from countries like China to keep the prices of their shoes down.Such labor practices would be harder to enact in the United States, where the government is responsible for enforcing labor laws.

Corporate Strategy - Essay Example It is a fully owned subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America. The music company operates globally and includes a roster inclusive of a broad range of artists, both international superstars and local artists (Sony Music Entertainment, 2011). Data revealed from the financial results of the company during the year 2010 suggest that there was a decrease in the operating revenue and sales figures by 6.7% in comparison to its performance of the previous year (y-o-y). The sales figure was hit during the year 2010 due to the decrease in the sale of devices and consumer products. However, it is also evident that the decrease in the sale of this segment was moderately offset by that of the segment of financial services of the company. Due to depreciation in the value of Yen against both US dollar and Euro, the sale of the Sony in Japan suffered the crisis. However, there was an increment in the operating profit of the company by 259.6 billion Yen (Sony News and Information, 2010). Sony Music has however effectively managed to come out of the crisis and during recent times, the company has ultimately surpassed Universal Music Group through market share in the overall US market. The market share of Sony Music in the overall album segment including albums equivalent to tracks stood at 29.35% as of the end of the week on April 24, 2011. According to Nielson SoundScan, this percentage figure is only a few points above that of the Universal Music Group that stood at 29.26% during the same period (Christman, 2011). The neck-to-neck percentage figure of the market share suggests that there prevails cutthroat competition in the music industry. Apart from the Universal Music Group, the biggest competitors of the Sony Music are EMI Group Limited and Warner Music Group Corp. In this industry, demand of the products or the music publications is driven by spending of the consumers. The companiesââ¬â¢ profitability is dependent on promotion of new talent of music and also discovery of those talents. The companies in this industry operate through generation of revenue from its assets whose base is created by publications and recordings. Large companies in this industry such as that of Sony Music hold the advantage of both distribution and marketing. The smaller companies dwelling in this industry are generally referred to as ââ¬Ëindiesââ¬â¢ and these companies compete by concentrating on local artists and varieties of music (Christman, 2011). 2. Internal Resources and Culture Analysis 2.1 Financial Resources The music segment of Sony that comprises of operations of the US based Sony Music Entertainment (SME) and Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. (SMEJ) generated sales of 522.6 billion yen during the year 2010 that rose by 35% from the previous yearââ¬â¢s performance. Simultaneously, the operating income also increased by 31.1% and rose to 36.5 billion yen from 27.8 billion yen during the past year of 2009. The increment figure of sales in the musi c segment has only been due to the fact that although the segment had begun its operation during the month of October 2008, the sales figure has been considered for the full year on a consolidated basis. Had the sales figure been considered otherwise, there would have been a decrement in sales by 5%. On the other hand, considering the operating inc

The epic of gilgamisg Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
The epic of gilgamisg - Essay Example Enkidu, on the other hand, is more courageous, and he prefers the wild ways of the countryside, and the company of animals. It is Enkidu who is more willing to take on the challenge of battle and heroic deeds, which actually makes him the appear to be the better choice for a great leader. Enkidu ends up being killed, however. In some way he is like a tragic hero who sacrifices himself for his friend. I thought it was weak of Gilgamesh to become so depressed after Enkiduââ¬â¢s death, because the whole point of being a great leader is that you have to learn to overcome sadness and hardships in life, so that you can concentrate on what is best for your people. The ending of the story shows Gilgamesh coming through that phase, and realizing what his responsibilities are. He is more realistic, and stronger, thanks to the difficult experience of wandering through the world without his friend and brother Enkidu. This kind of hero is less dramatic than Enkidu, but in the end it is the sober and sensible king who brings glory to his people, and so perhaps the message of the story is that it takes different kinds of hero to lead a great people. Bravery in battle is all very well, but the ability to rise up after lifeââ¬â¢s hard knocks is also a very valuable

Case Study: Murder of Ashley Smith Essay -- Scott Jones, Frederick Joh
Introduction The purpose of this paper is to discuss and analyze the practices conducted by law enforcement during the investigation of the murder of Ashley Smith. The following pages will discuss the crime scene investigation, the evidence collection, the investigative steps following the initial crime scene investigation, the interviews of witnesses and suspects, and other strategies performed by the acting case investigators. Constitutional challenges have surfaced regarding specific pieces of critical evidence and a section of this paper will analyze the admissibility of this evidence. Lastly this caseââ¬â¢s law enforcement processes will be contrasted with textbook processes in an effort to determine the validity of the caseââ¬â¢s outcome. The Crime Scene On 11/3/00, two truck drivers discovered the deceased body of fourteen-year-old Ashley Smith in a wooded area behind the Pizza Hut, located on Old Annapolis Rd. Local authorities were dispatched and D/CPL. Glenn Case was designated as the primary investigator on the case. Upon arrival, D/CPL. Case observed that the medical examiner had already examined the body, evidence had been collected, photographs of the crime scene had been taken both on ground and from a helicopter (aerial view), and D/CPL. Case was advised that the victim had not yet been identified. The victimââ¬â¢s body had what appeared to be several stab wounds to her neck and abdominal area. D/CPL Case will later be advised by medical examiners that the victim had been stabbed thirty-four times and had also been manually strangled. The victimââ¬â¢s body was positioned with her head facing towards the Pizza Hut parking lot. The positioning coupled with bloody drag marks on the concrete suggested that the victim had been ... ...e resulted arrest of the suspects reflects this applicably. References Bond, J. (2007). Le Corbusier
ââ¬Å"The house is a machine for living in. â⬠-Le Corbusier House 14 at Weissenhof: http://mpdrolet. tumblr. com/pos/34901891099/weissenhof-estate-le-corbusier-peter-gossel. As with many other architects of his time, Le Corbusier was fascinated with the Industrial Age. The Industrial Age brought a multitude of new materials for architects to work with, as well as new processes to utilize these revolutionary materials. Le Corbusier sought to coalesce these new ideas into his 5 points towards a new architecture. The five essential points set out above represent a fundamentally new aesthetic. Nothing is left to us of the architecture of past epochsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (Conrads, 1970, p. 100) By combining the newly readily available materials of steel and concrete with the process of mass production Le Corbusier invents a house that embodies a machine. No longer is the house simply a decorative container to live in. The house that utilizes Le Corbusierââ¬â¢s 5 points actively works to improve the lives of its inhabitants just as any successful machine of the Industrial Age.As seen in House 14, all attention is focused on satisfying the 5 points and consequentially superfluous ornament is disregarded. Rather the building as a whole could be described a monument to the Industrial age. The clean-cut corners and lines evoke a sense of the ordered factory and sharp contrasts remind viewers of the positive and negative results of Industrialism. ââ¬Å"Industry, overwhelming us like a flood which rolls on towards its destined ends, has furnished us with new tools adapted to this new epoch, animated by the new spirit. (Conrads, 1970, p. 61) Corbusierââ¬â¢s idea of the ââ¬Å"new spiritâ⬠is evident in his 5 points. The new ââ¬Å"machineâ⬠house improves peopleââ¬â¢s lives by helping them adapt to and live in the boisterous times of the Industrial Age. The roof of the house is covered in a roof garden to give its inhabitants a place to relax from the inc essant clamor of the new age. The house is set off the ground on pilotes to separate the inhabitant from the dirty byproducts of Industrialism. This sense of cleanliness is also emphasized in the whitewashed walls giving a sense of purity and sanitation. ââ¬Å"Economic law inevitably governs our acts and our thoughts. â⬠(Conrads, 1970, p. 61) As with any mass produced machine, cost is an issue. Corbusier had to settle for using the relatively cheap materials of stucco over brick to allow his house to be mass-produced. Le Corbusier revolutionized the house into an efficient machine with his 5 points. ââ¬Å"Economic law inevitably governs our acts and our thoughts. â⬠(Conrads, 1970, p. 61)

The Extraordinary Jimi Hendrix Essay - 2402 Words
The extraordinary performances, recording, and lyrics of James Marshall Hendrix have made him impossible to forget. This American rock music guitarist made a legendary mark not only in the history of rock n roll but also on the pop culture as a whole (Ross 32). With unique techniques never seen before and blatant sex-related performances on stage, he became one of the most influential music figures of the 60s (Kamin). Hendrix was not born into stardom nor was it given to him by any means. He strived all throughout his life to be the very best. Johnny Allen Hendrix was born on November 27, 1942 in Seattle, Washington to Al and Lucille Hendrix, and not until four years later did his father change his sons name to James Marshallâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Unfortunately, he never was able to get Richard to realize his talents, so he abandoned Richards tour in St. Louis (Wolters, Pre-Experience). After aimlessly wandering for awhile, Hendrix found himself in Atlanta and once again teamed up with Little Richard. The tour brought them to Los Angeles where he then went in his own direction. He hooked up with Richard for a third time during the summer of 1964 to record an album in which he again felt confined as being only a backup to Little Richard (Wolters, Pre-Experience). Hendrix later joined the budding musician Arthur Lee, but the partnership did not last long as he once again set out in search of his own identity (Wolters, Pre-Experience). He embarked as a traveling musician for various tours backing such artists as Ike and Tina Turner, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, B.B. King, Chuck Berry, King Curtis, Solomon Burke, Chuck Jackson, Jackie Wilson, and several others (Wolters, Hendrix). On his next endeavor, he teamed up with saxophonist Lonnie Youngblood. The pair was short-lived as Hendrix soon split, and his adventurous spirit ended him up in New York where he rented a small, cheap apartment and drifted from job to dead-end job (Wolters, Pre-Experience). The spring of 1964 brought better luck to Hendrix. El Nino free essay sample
# 8211 ; Persuasive Letter Essay, Research Paper El Ni O, it was learned, is every bit much an atmospheric event as an pelagic 1. The air currents and the Waterss communicate with each other halfway around the universe. ( Johnson ) In a normal twelvemonth, the trade air currents blow from South America to Asia, forcing warm H2O to the far reaches of the western equatorial Pacific. During an El Ni O, this pool of warm H2O sloshes across the Pacific to Peru as the normal air currents weaken. The warmer-than-normal H2O adds heat and wet to the air above it, making cumulonimbuss and a typical storm path with far-reaching effects. ( Johnson ) El Ni O is a mass of warm H2O now in the southern Pacific. It is holding a planetary impact on the conditions. The warm H2O increases the H2O vapour over the Pacific and the Earth s normal conditions form. The consequence: heavy rains in the normally dry Southwest and fires in the drought-stricken rain woods of Malaysia. ( Jarvinen ) El Ni O is a seasonal ocean current that flows southerly along the seashore of northern Peru, it is frequently associated with atmospheric alterations. Scientists by and large refer to El Ni O and its related phenomena as the El Ni o-Southern Oscillation ( ENSO ) . The current itself is warm, nutrient-poor, and comparatively low in salt. Its name ( Spanish, # 8220 ; the kid # 8221 ; ) is derived from its reaching during the Christmas season. This current is most good developed from January to March, and it normally penetrates merely a few grades south of the equator before meeting with the northward-flowing Peru Current. El Ni O is an extension of the eastward-flowing equatorial rip. It turns south along the seashore of Ecuador. Every four to five old ages, in an lone partly understood rhythm that appears to integrate a 2-year subcycle, a weakening of usually strong southeasterly trade air currents allows the El Ni o current to widen farther South. Water temperatures rise several g rades above norm, with ruinous consequences. ( Katcher ) The higher temperature along the seashore kills planktonic beings and fish, therefore harming the major fishing industry in the country ; of import guano-producing birds starve or abandon their nests. The higher temperature besides causes increased vaporization, which in bend green goodss excessive rainfall on some land countries. A major ENSO perturbation affects other ocean-current forms and causes widespread climatic alterations over the Western Hemisphere and even Europe and Asia, every bit good as over the southern Pacific Ocean. Disastrous implosion therapy and drouths may ensue in some countries. Research workers have developed theoretical accounts of tropical ocean-atmosphere interactions that enable them to successfully foretell ENSO fluctuations and better prognosis climatic perturbations. ( Arbarbanel ) ( Fullmer ) El Ni O is a periodic, weather-disrupting status in the tropical Pacific, in which westward-blowing trade air currents weaken, leting warm H2O to drive E to South America. ( Livezey ) El Ni O is a big pool of remarkably warm H2O that appears approximately every three to four old ages in the cardinal and eastern Pacific Ocean along the equator. ( Fullmer ) The abnormally warm H2O causes a large addition in rainfall in cardinal and southern South America, E Africa, and the cardinal and eastern tropical Pacific. El Ni o created drouth in Indonesia, Australia and the western tropical Pacific, Central America and the Caribbean. ( Fullmer ) Actually, the size of El Ni o doesn t alteration much from episode to episode but its strength does and that s what affairs. The strength affairs because if it is really strong, it has the possible to convey monolithic rainstorms that could do many inundations. It besides matters because it has the capableness to bring forth monolithic hurricanes. If the El Ni O is weak, so the effects are less and make non do as much harm. El Ni o s rhythm is really irregular. For case, there were a figure of really strong El Ni os between 1900 and 1920, a few in the early 1940s, and several per decennary from the late fiftiess to the present, but merely really weak 1s in the periods between. The last decennary and a half have been a peculiar active period for strong El Ni os. ( Weisser ) Way back in the 1500s, fishermen in Peru noticed that remarkably warm coastal currents reduced their anchovy landings. At the same clip, local husbandmans noticed the heating coincided with increased rainfall. Fantastic gardens sprung from bare waterless lands in some parts, and the old ages were called # 8220 ; a os de abundancia # 8221 ; # 8211 ; old ages of copiousness in Spanish. In other parts, torrential rains brought ruin. ( Johnson ) The warming frequently peaked around Christmas so the current was nicknamed # 8216 ; El Ni o # 8217 ; # 8211 ; the Christ kid in Spanish. The late eightiess fascinated a few scientists fascinated by the phenomenon. From the seamans logs and husbandmans # 8217 ; farmers calendar, it was impossible to patch together the El Ni o narrative or even to specify a normal twelvemonth in rainfall and H2O temperature. It was impossible to patch together the El Ni O narratives because they did non compose down adequate information that was accurate, every clip El Ni O occurred. ( Johnson ) Peruvian fisherman foremost noticed it during Christmas over 200 old ages ago. El Ni O is a periodic and immense, phenomenon. This twelvemonth # 8217 ; s is one and half times the size of the United States, has adequate H2O to make full the Great Lakes 30 times over and has 93 times the energy Americans extracted from fossil fuels in 1995. ( Wilson ) No 1 knows when the first El Ni O occurred, but ice-core records from the Andes in Peru suggest these clime fluctuations have been portion of Earth # 8217 ; s weather rhythm for 1000s of old ages. Some scientists speculate the disorderly conditions forms began when glaciers stopped withdrawing and sea degrees stabilized some 5,000 old ages ago. Others believe they have identified El Ni o signatures 100s of 1000s of old ages old in coral growing rates. ( Johnson ) Indirectly, the warm current besides crashed the local guano industry, which sold the nutrient-packed sea bird dungs for fertiliser. Seabirds had either starved or migrated with the anchovies to colder fish-filled Waterss, go forthing the local stones guano-free. ( Johnson ) Interest in El Ni O rekindled in 1972-73, when a monster-sized heating event rolled across Peru, fall ining its anchovy piscary, so the largest in the universe. As the financial effects of a fishmeal deficit rippled around the Earth, the monetary value of protein options such as soya beans skyrocketed. Domestic fowl husbandmans in the United States passed their glide provender costs on to consumers, raising retail poulet monetary values 40 per centum. This was the sort of scientific discipline that interested Wall Street. ( Johnson ) Despite the advancement, Mother Nature played mayhem with scientists # 8217 ; apprehension of the boisterous phenomenon in 1982, when a monster-sized El Ni o turn over across the Pacific with wildly unexpected effects. It was to day of the month the largest, most intense El Ni O in modern times. Farmers in Peru were up to their orbs in rain. Fires scorched Borneo. Droughts hit Australia. An estimated 2,000 people died. All told, the harm estimations ranged from $ 8 billion to $ 13 billion. ( Johnson ) El Ni O is back and no 1 has put out the welcome mat. This twelvemonth is expected to be stronger and more destructive than the 1982-83 event that cost the universe over 8 billion dollars. Scientists continue to document and analyze past events to derive a better apprehension of the phenomenon. It # 8217 ; s no simple undertaking because no two El Ni os are likewise and each occurs at irregular intervals runing from two to ten old ages. El Ni O caused the anchovy population along the Peruvian seashore to drop from 20 million to 2 million in 1972-73. This in bend reduced the figure of marine birds who fed on the anchovy. In 1982-83 the strongest El Ni O of the century occurred. Weather-related catastrophes hit all five continents. In 1991-92, the sum of harm was numbering over eight billion dollars. There were terrible drouths in tropical topographic points and major implosion therapy in the Upper Mississippi Valley. A big figure of hurricanes occurred in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbea n Sea and Gulf of Mexico. ( Livezey ) In other words, 1997-1998 El Ni O may be the biggest in 150 old ages, some scientists predict. ( Livezey ) The first hints were found in the 1920s by the British scientist Sir Gilbert Walker who discovered that there was a connexion between barometric readings at Stationss on the eastern and western sides of the Pacific. He noticed that when force per unit area rises in the E, it normally falls in the West, and frailty versa. Sir Gilbert dramatized this procedure by mentioning to it as the # 8220 ; Southern Oscillation # 8221 ; . The Southern Oscillation plays an of import function in the behaviour of predominating air currents in the equatorial Pacific. When the force per unit area is high in the eastern Pacific and low in the western Pacific, surface air currents are driven toward the West along the equator from the Galapagos Islands about all the manner to Indonesia. This is said to be a # 8220 ; high-index # 8221 ; ( strong gradient ) status. When the force per unit area oscillates back to a # 8220 ; low-index # 8221 ; ( weak gradient ) status, the eastern surface winds weaken. Walker noticed that Asiatic monsoon seasons under low index conditions are frequently linked to drought in Australia, Indonesia, India, and parts of Africa and mild winters in western Canada. Old ages subsequently, research workers learned that desert islands in the cardinal equatorial Pacific receive small or no rainfall, except for low-index old ages when they experience torrential rains for months. Hence, Walker # 8217 ; s Southern Oscillation is besides linked to dramatic alterations in tropical rainfall. It wasn # 8217 ; t until the late sixtiess that the connexion between Walker # 8217 ; s Southern Oscillation and El Ni O was made. Some 50 old ages after Walker # 8217 ; s observations, the Norse professor Jacob Bjerknes at the University of California was the first to see a connexion between remarkably warm sea-surface temperatures, the weak east winds, and heavy rainfall that accompany low-index conditions in the equatorial Pacific. It is now good accepted that a low-index Southern Oscillation status is associated with El Ni O, frequently referred to as ââ¬Å"ENSOâ⬠to stress the connexion. ( Livezey ) The conveyance of H2O, and hence heat, by the air currents in the equatorial Pacific is cardinal to understanding the mechanics of an El Ni O. The eastern air currents that blow along the equator and the southeasterly air currents that blow along the Peru and Ecuador seashores entrain surface H2O along with them. The Earth # 8217 ; s rotary motion deflects the surface currents northerly in the Northern Hemisphere and due south in the Southern Hemisphere due to what is known as the Coriolis Effect. The surface Waterss are hence deflected off from the equator in both waies and off from the coastline. Where the surface H2O moves off, colder, nutrient-rich H2O comes up from below to replace it, a phenomenon known as upwelling. Both the equatorial upwelling and the coastal upwelling are concentrated in narrow parts less than 160 km broad. When the air currents are blowing strongly, this set of cold H2O takes the signifier of a typical # 8220 ; cold lingua # 8221 ; widening westward alo ng the equator from the South American seashore all the manner to the international date line. This characteristic can be observed utilizing infrared satellite imagination, which measures the H2O temperature, and satellite altimetry, which measures the comparative depression in sea degree in parts of upwelling. ( Allen ) During an El Ni o twelvemonth, the east winds blow strongly for a figure of months, the thermocline about reaches the surface in the eastern equatorial Pacific, and tremendous volumes of warm surface H2O build-up in the West # 8230 ; so the air currents weaken # 8230 ; all of that energy has to travel someplace. First, the eastern air currents begin to withdraw eastward. As the air current retreats, equatorial upwelling lessenings, cut downing the supply of foods to come up dwellers. Sea degree beads in the West and rises in the E as warm surface H2O surges eastward along the equator in the signifier of a pulsation. When this pulsation of comparatively warm H2O reaches the eastern terminal of the basin, typically a few months subsequently, it is forced to turn northerly and southerly along the seashore, doing pilchards and other species of fish to travel, and raising sea degree as it goes. These effects have been felt as far north as Canada and as far south as cardinal Chile. As th e moist air above the ocean warms, deep clouds are formed which produce heavy rain along the equator, switching of all time eastward. Atmospheric force per unit area adjusts consequently. Barometers fall over the cardinal and eastern Pacific and rise over Indonesia and Australia, ensuing in farther weakening and eastbound retreat of the east winds, merely as Sir Gilbert Walker observed about 75 old ages ago. Scientists now know that the annihilating effects of El Ni O are non merely confined to the equatorial Pacific, but throughout the Americas, and possibly beyond. We are merely get downing to appreciate how monolithic these catastrophes are. ( Allen ) The job of observing planetary heating has been well complicated. This is because some analyses have suggested that some of the characteristics of the planetary heating pelagic signature resemble El Ni O. Picking these two apart in the records is slippery although some success has been achieved so far. Global warming s impact on El Ni o itself is non clear either because recent work has suggested that there are feedback effects in the Torrid Zones that offset some of the heating at the equator. ( Arbarbanel ) The Atlantic hurricane season was a batch less blowy than usual, and El Ni O is the ground. Three hurricanes blew in from the Atlantic during a storm season that ended Sunday. The norm is six, while the National Hurricane Center chased a brawny 17 hurricanes in the Pacific, it merely watched seven named storms in the Atlantic. ( Neely ) Precipitation was above normal in November, but non remarkably wet. Seasonal per centums were by and large the highest in the Central Valley and in coastal countries, with some intense storms reported in the South Coast part early December. ( Wilson ) As of Dec. 22, rainfall was 116 per centum of normal in Eureka, 163 per centum in Sacramento, 185 per centum in San Francisco, 127 per centum in Fresno, 189 per centum in Bakersfield, 231 per centum in Santa Barbara, 147 per centum in Los Angeles and 76 per centum in San Diego. ( Neely ) The snow battalion near Donner Summit, West of Lake Tahoe, was under 40 inches compared with more than 110 inches in late December 1982, when a old El Ni o event gave California a record moisture season. ( Fullmer ) As of mid-December, multipurpose reservoirs in the Central Valley had more than 7 million acre-feet of inundation control infinite, more than 2 million more than required. Statewide river overflow is about 80 per centum of norm for this clip of the twelvemonth. ( Katcher ) The National Weather Service said that this twelvemonth s warming in the tropical Pacific could take to Christmas snow in Texas, New Mexico, the Mississippi vale, even as far south as Mexico. ( Neely ) The Thai Interior Ministry, meanwhile, has ordered provincial governments to fix forces, equipment and H2O trucks to assist in countries worst affected by the drouth. ( Wilson ) The Asiatic Disaster Preparedness Center, which is scheduled to keep a crises meeting in Bangkok following month, has warned that El Ni O will worsen the fiscal crisis that is already pounding Thailand and several other Southeast Asiatic states. ( Katcher ) El Ni o eventually hit northern California with swamping rains and coastal inundations over he weekend and meteorologists said that on Tuesday the part was set to have more impacts of unsmooth conditions this hebdomad. After months of listening to doom-and-gloom anticipations about the likely effects of El Ni O, occupants in the San Francisco Bay country were treated to a show of the conditions phenomenon # 8217 ; s might when heavy rains snarled traffic and raised frights of mudslides in hilly countries. Forecasters said the rains along the California seashore were influenced by El Ni O, a warm-water mass off the seashore of South America that has powered climatological displacements across the Earth. ( Wilson ) It appears that many people in the Midwest are overlooking El Ni O. They likely think that merely as long that El Ni o isn T impacting us in any truly bad ways, they shouldn t worry about it. I think what comes about, must travel around. In the spring and in the summer we will see highly low temperatures. These could impact us by killing off many agricultural merchandises and making really low or no net incomes for the midwest husbandmans. The opposite effects of El Ni O could besides happen. The remarkably cold temperatures could happen in the late summer and early autumn, which would ensue in a immense loss of harvests. The same could besides go on to another state that we depend on for purchasing a peculiar merchandise. If that happens to another state s merchandise, so we would hold to pay a batch more for the same merchandise. Therefore I think we should set more attempt into foretelling El Ni os. I think we could look back in to the past records of serious conditions storms and seek to happen a form to the El Ni O. If we could make that, we could break predict El Ni O and salvage many lives and much money. If we save could salvage money and lives, I think we should be willing to pay any monetary value to foretell El Ni os better. I think that if we work hard plenty, we could obtain the engineering and we would be able to better foretell the El Ni O. Then if the temperature was traveling to drop in the first portion of spring, we could wait until it was over to works our harvests. Or if the temperature was traveling to drop subsequently in the summer husbandmans could reap the harvests earlier. If my program isn T accepted, El Ni O will go on to destruct personal and Federal belongings. El Ni O will besides go on to kill 1000s of people every clip it occurs. If my program is recognized amendss to belongings and deceases may still happen, but it will significantly cut down the figure. We will be able to foretell the effects and better prepare for it.
